ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad District and Sessions Court on Tuesday rejected the bail plea of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shehbaz Gill in a sedition case.
Yesterday, Additional Sessions Judge Zafar Iqbal reserved the verdict after the court heard arguments from all parties involved. Gill's lawyer informed the court on Monday that his client was prepared to apologize for any misunderstanding in the case regarding inciting a mutiny in the army. At the start of the hearing, Special Public Prosecutor Raja Rizwan Abbasi argued that sedition was "clearly" committed, adding that the words of the accused Gill could not be excused in any way. He said that the accused organized against the officials of the state institution. With his remarks, Gill sought to involve the sensitive institution in politics. Defense lawyer Burhan Moazzam said his client's statement was distorted and a first informant report (FIR) was registered against him. He said his client was ready to clear up the misconception and apologize. The lawyer said his client was not so "crazy" as to speak against the country. "Gill is an educated person who has been awarded three times as the best professor in the US," he added. He alleged that the strategic media cell wanted to create a clash between the PTI and the state institution. The lawyer said that his client respects state institutions and stands with them.
