ODI against New Zealand set to be his last in the format.
Finch, who has played 145 ODIs for Australia, has struggled for form in recent matches, scoring just 26 runs in the last seven innings.
In a Cricket Australia press release, Finch said: “It's been a fantastic ride with incredible memories".
“I have been extremely fortunate to be part of some great one-day sides. I was equally blessed by everyone I played with and many people behind the scenes. Now is the time to give the new leader the best possible opportunity to prepare for and win the next World Cup. Thank you to everyone who has helped and supported me on my way to this point."
While he will not be part of Australia's 2023 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup campaign, Finch will continue to lead the side in this year's T20 World Cup.
Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley said: “On behalf of Australian Cricket, I would like to congratulate Aaron on his tremendous contribution as captain of the Australian men's ODI team and as a great representative of the 50-over format.
“Aaron is an extremely gifted and determined player whose outstanding feats with the bat have been matched by his strong and inspirational leadership. His decision to step down now from the ODI captaincy is typical of his selfless approach to the game.
"I am delighted that Aaron will lead the Australian team into the upcoming Men's T20 World Cup, where his leadership, experience and tactical qualities will be integral to the defense of our T20 World Cup title on home soil."
