Karachi: A record 116 Motorcyclists lost their lives in the last 10 months

 It turned out to be a death trap for riders. The year 2022 proved to be deadly for motorcyclists in Karachi. In 10 months, 116 motorcyclists lost their lives in various accidents. A total of 165 people died in various accidents in the first 10 months of 2022 in Shahr-Quaid, of which 116 were motorcyclist.

Heavy traffic on city roads is the major cause of accidents. According to the data shared by the Karachi Traffic Police, 11 city buses, 12 water tankers, 14 dumper trucks and oil tankers, 20 trawlers and 37 people died in other truck accidents.

Data released by the Karachi Police shows that around 65 percent of accidents in the city are due to heavy traffic.

DIG Traffic Ahmed Nawaz Cheema told the English daily Dawn that other factors including poor road engineering, lack of street lights, absence of road signs, ineffective traffic signals, lack of skills among drivers and violation of traffic rules are the causes of accidents.

He also admitted that driving licenses were not issued through standard procedures and fake licenses were being issued. Trucks were involved in most of the accidents which numbered 31 out of which 28 were fatal.

Data shared by the traffic police shows that 165 lives were lost in 145 fatal accidents, including 116 motorcyclists in 98 fatal accidents, 32 pedestrians in 32 fatal accidents and 17 other people in 15 accidents. Became

The highest number of accidents occurred in Gharbi district where 84 accidents were reported in which 53 proved fatal and 60 civilians died. Out of 35 accidents, 33 were fatal in Malir district in which 40 died, 18 in 22 accidents in Eastern, 15 in 19 accidents in South, 15 in 16 accidents in Central, 13 in 16 accidents in Korangi and district 5 civilians died in Kemari. 

According to the data, the total number of people who died in accidents in the first 10 months of 2021 was 183, which was 18 deaths more than this year.
